Growing Up with the Web

Just over a week ago David Rodriguez emailed me an invitation to write a piece for his web design news and resource site Webpage Design for Designers. I’m happy to say that my article, Growing Up with the Web, has just been published.

Webpage Design for Designers Logo

If you get a chance, please give it a read (I tried to keep it as succinct as possible) and perhaps leave a comment here to let me know what you think.

As a side note, I mention the SXSW Web Awards towards the end of the article. It’s interesting to see that 4 of the 5 finalists in the student category are entirely Flash-based websites. Whether or not that is a reflection of what we can expect from the next generation of designers remains to be seen. It does worry me though.

In other news, SR.com was recently featured on Smashing Magazine’s 45 More Excellent Blog Designs. I have enjoyed browsing through Smashing Mag’s extensive lists in the past and am honoured to be included on there (and for it to generate fantastic reactions like this). Be warned though, it’s the kind of site you can get lost in for hours if you’re not careful.

Fitting in nicely with this, Shawn Blanc has just shared the story behind his love of design and technology growing up.

Shawn has also had three great articles published on WPDFD which are definitely worth a read while you’re over there.

It’s funny you talk about the openess of the internet at the end of your write up Sam. I was at a seminar recently and one of the speakers said, “The way the world is turning older generations want privacy yet the younger generation expect privacy but don’t want it.”

Thought it was a good way of putting it, and this is the way it is especially with most young people now being somehow in to social networking etc.

Awesome write-up though. Very good indeed.

Sam,

Enjoyed the article.  I am teaching web design in high school, and working to improve upon some of the lacking in the education system that you talk about.  I know there are a few more of me out there!

Unfortunately, like with all matters, high school tends to be several years behind the industry standards.  Blogs like yours, though, can serve as inspiration and guidance to those wanting to learn more on their own.

Thanks!

Nice article mate, congratulations on getting it featured too.

That is a tad worrying about the Flash sites in the student category, here’s me thinking that it’s on the way out in favour of more SEO friendly and CSS-based sites. But hey, if you’ve got the skills as a student, flaunt them I guess :)

Incidentially, nice to see someone around my age getting recognition for once! Ride the wave mate!

I thought the article was excellent. I’m also into web design, I’ve been through the same tables path at around the same time as you were before, and am exactly the same age as you are.

And I bow down. ;) You move way too fast! :D
